Ipad app makes a layered psd file. Won't open in Moho.

Post by kristenanne77 »

I use an app called Artstudio on my ipad. I break a picture up into parts on separate layers.
I preserve the layers by saving as a psd file. Moho Studio debut 12 will not open this file.
( I have Corel Paint Shop Pro and it WILL open that same psd file into its separate layers.
Also, after opening in Paint Shop Pro I saved it again as a psd file and tried to open this file.
Same result. Moho will not recognize file.)
Is this a bug?

Thanks

According to the manual, Importing Layered PSD files is a Moho Pro feature.

That said, I recommend outputting individual PNG files with transparent backgrounds from your program or iPad app instead. Even though I use Moho 12 Pro at my workplace, I prefer using PNG for a variety of reasons, but mostly because a setup can break if I have to drastically change the original PSD files layers structure (which I tend to do frequently). To me, It's much simpler and more predictable when I'm using PNG files for a character. When I change a layer, I just export and overwrite a PNG file and Moho will automatically update the artwork in the Project file.

I don't know if your programs can output individual layers as PNG but it's worth looking into. In Photoshop, for example, there are a couple of different ways to batch save layers as PNG using native and third party scripts, or automatically with Generate. There may be similar options for your program.

Thank you very much.
A few weeks ago I found that I could do exactly what you said with transparent png files :D, which the app does make :D .
But as I started getting "better" I thought "why can't I do this with only one file", so I started looking into the psd format.
Oh well, I cant afford pro so I will use what I got.

I will continue with the transparent png files.. And maybe there is some kind of "batch em up" app.I can find.

Thanks again.
I will now stop trying to do the impossible.

Found one :D :D :D . I can send select several files and then send them from the ipad to dropbox. Pretty quick.

Glad to hear you found a way to make it work for you.

Yeah, I wouldn't sweat the PSD import feature too much. PSD import is useful for if you don't plan to take full advantage of special layer editing features or expect to make drastic changes to the layers themselves (adding, replacing or removing layers, applying clip masks and various layer fx, etc.,) I'm sure some artists are finding layered PSD import very useful and, in my experience, this feature has been better for art that's not likely to changes--like background paintings. But even with multi-layered background paintings I've had to switch to individual PNG layers because I was later asked to make changes to the art that broke the PSD layer links. For me, it's more fool proof to stick to individual PNG layers and not have to worry about what's going to break the PSD file support.
