Is there a way to tell the timeline to show every layer that has any keyframes in it during a given range, or maybe during the visible range of the timeline, or something like that?
Alternately, I would love to be able to select a specific subset of layers to display in the timeline and then save that selection as a template. So instead of checking the visible-in-timeline box for a whole bunch of layers, I could select that template and all the layers that are a member of that template would display. Is there such a thing?

If you create layer comps of the sets of layers you want to show on the timeline, you can show/hide these sets from the Layer Comps window (tab on the Style window if docked).
