how do I animate a wave?

this one might be a stretch but I thought I would ask: I'm looking to animate a large surfable wave like a big curling wave for a character to surf in. is this possible?..or better yet how? has anyone seen any tutorials on this they could point me towards? forum and youtube searches turned up minimal water effects so I thought I would ask here....any ideas? thanks in advance if you know how.

Create that wave shape, move it over the ocean, add some looping ripple effects where the light is reflected, and some foam on top.
