move entire animation to a new location on screen

I downloaded a character animation from my moho library and need to position it on the screen. I have relative keyframing checked but when I try repositioning the character with the move layer tool it produces a path and snaps back to the beginning of the path when I press play. I don't get it because I've been positioning other animated characters in this same document on frame zero with the move layer tool (birds flying) without creating a path. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Put the character into another group folder and position that.
