moho photoshop files, export shows "X" on each layer

Post by toddwaddington »

Well, I am certain this is a newbie question but I can't find anything on it and believe me, I've searched all morning. Not the first time I've encountered issues with exporting image files which show as yellow circles with a white x. I took a PNG of Bernie standing in his mittens. Chopped it up in PS (each part on a separate layer), imported into Moho 12.5. Added bones, etc.

When I export I see a bunch of boxes (layers) with yellow circle with a white x through each. I've tried a variety of things. I cut up a jpg and it did the same thing. Also, the original PNG file renders fine as a solid image. The journey from photoshop into and out of MOHO seems to be the issue.

What am I doing wrong? https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipP ... 0EaYKzj0Zc

dropbox moho file (no bones or animation) and PS file: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rr45jjo0ulpx ... aKQla?dl=0

Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and feel free to grab the Bernie PNG. I grabbed it from a youtube tutorial download.

OK,
So, it't the ol' take your car into the shop and that "tick tick" sounds goes away. I am trying everything I can to replicate the issue, but it's working fine now. Same file. Just ate lunch, came back and so far so good. Oy!

Hey Victor! How kind of you to look into it and reply. Yeah, I imported another PS file from an old AS tutorial series and the same problem (when it was still acting up). But, like I said, came back a while later---the only thing I think I changed was I unchecked "transparency" in the display drop down. I thought I had read that somewhere. But the display shouldn't affect render, correct? Anyway, thanks for looking into it! seems to be fine now.

That was my tester puppet. Now I need to go back and do it with a little more detail and corrections.

AHA!! I think I found something. So, the PSD file I used when it worked was the COPIED file I uploaded to dropbox.
I tried the same thing with the other tutorial (Soldier) file used in AS11 tutorial and did the same thing. I uploaded it to dropbox then, downloaded that same file from dropbox into Moho--AND IT WORKED.

So, there is some sort of metadata issue. Mac related? Perhaps "misreading" some encryption?

first two files in the Dropbox link are the before and after (process as described above). https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rr45jjo0ulpx ... aKQla?dl=0

Personally, I don't bother with the layered PSD route. Instead, I use this free script for Photoshop called Photoshop-Export-Layers-to-Files-Fast to output separate PNG files of the layers. This script is able to output all visible layers from a Photoshop document, trimmed or untrimmed, and it's able to overwrite any previous output if you update the original layers.

(Note: Photoshop comes with a native script for saving layers as PNG, but it lacks many useful features found in the above script. Plus, the above script is indeed faster than the Photoshop version.)

The advantage with this approach is that it avoids things that can go wrong in a Moho project when working with a layered PSD, like broken layer IDs (occurs after a merge) or missing new layers. I also find PNGs can be replaced more reliably than layers from a PSD import. The downside is that, if you use the script's Trim Images option, you'll need to position the trimmed images manually (correct scale is preserved though.) To help with that, I also like to export a flattened PNG of the PSD so I have a template for placement. (Just duplicate the group in Photoshop, flatten it, and call that layer 'Template'.)

(Note to Krita users: Krita comes with a similar layers to PNG script. It's not as fully featured at this one but it works well for Moho.)

Hope this helps.
