External Video Editor?

Does anyone know a freeware video editor? The tutorias said to use an "external video editor" to better make sound, but I can't find any.

I am involved in a "low budget" project with another application.

They are using all open source free applications for image, sound and video editing... well almost all.

Anyway... the three main programs suggested for this project are...

These are all free and run on Mac/Win

have you used Jahshaka yourself yet? Any comments? I've looked at it once or twice, but not been tempted.

Windows XP comes with free Movie Maker (version 2 downloadable from Microsoft site or possibly included with Windows XP Service Pack 2).

Mac OSX comes with iMovie.

Sometimes you'll see a giveaway older version of a commercial video editing app on the front of computer magazines (often with online registration for advertising email list purposes).

I second Vern's reference to Audacity as a decent free audio editing program.

There are relatively inexpensive video editing programs aimed at the home user - at the moment I would lean towards Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6 or Serif MoviePlus 4, although at least one forum member supports Pure Motion EditStudio (a fine program, but it doesn't support alpha channels in AVI/MOV - use chromakeying instead).

I have not used Jahshaka yet. I stll use AE, premier or iMovie.

I have just downloaded both Audacity and Jahshake and plan to play with them on my current Moho project. My copies of AE and Premier are kind of "old"... I just don't have the money to upgrade yet.

I have an old version of sound editing software which doesn't support 24 bit audio so I want to play with Audacity. Apparently everyone is going 24 bit... I am still stuck with 16... need to get up to speed.

The new beta of Audacity has some cool new features.

I will let everyone know how my testing goes with these two products.
