Saving Styles and effects

Post by boygordon »

Hi, I'm just getting back into using Moho after a year off. Setting up new characters and using some effects - gradient, soft edge - on the fill on some shapes.

I've saved the style to reuse on other characters, but the effects don't seem to save with the style? And I cant see any way to save individual effects settings?

So it looks like I have to set up effects by hand every time - I've got to be missing something.

Can anyone help me out on this?
Thanks

Everything in the style window can be included in a saved style, but if you're talking about things like the specific gradient handle placement and angle, that's a shape parameter, not a style parameter.
But soft edge is saved in styles. You just have to edit it in that saved style, instead of directly on particular shapes.

If you continue to have trouble, maybe post a file so we can give you more specific steps.

There are two ways to make styles available for reuse in other projects.

Method #1: Use the Library. When the Style is added to the library, you can drag it and drop it from there. To add Styles to the Library, open the Library, create a folder for Styles, right click on the folder, and select Import Styles. Then enter a name for your file, check Import All Styles, and click Save. This will create a file with all of the project's current styles. Now you can drag this file into another project's window and the same Styles will be available there.

Method #2: Styles are normally embedded in the project they are created in. So, if you import an item with a custom style applied, that style will become available to other items in that project. Tip: I sometimes make a project with vector squares filled with custom styles, basically like a 'swatch book'. Then, I can import this 'swatch book' to any project and reuse the styles.

The Library is a pretty good system, but I prefer the second 'low-tech' approach. IMO, the Library works well for local asset management, but on productions where I'm sharing assets with other users, it's easier for everybody to just follow the same asset management conventions we use for everything.

To be clear, Library does allow you to use shared folders on a network, so it can work with multiple users if you choose to use it this way. (As a matter of fact, I may revisit trying Library to see if I feel any differently about the system now...it's been a long time since I last tried it.)

Oh, and the quickie way: have both projects open, the one with shape(s) that have the custom Style(s) you want to reuse, and the one that doesn't. Now, just copy the shape(s) to the other project...now that project has the Style(s).

In many ways, Moho is very flexible about workflow.

Ah, Thanks for the information!

I thought I was missing something, and turns out I was! I was looking for the Effects slots to be filled with the settings from the saved style, not noticing that they were being applied 'in the background' as it were.

Editing them from the master style makes sense now.

Thanks!
