Smart bone dial issue

Post by Mattyj »

An issue that I have had a few times now, is that I will create a smart bone dial, say for a head turn, and the action works fine inside the action on the blue timeline but when I come back out into the Mainline the smart bone dial does not work at all, even off of frame zero. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Do you have nested bone layers? They can limit the reach of a smartbone in term of layers that can be animated inside its smart action. But they may look like they work until you try it on the main timeline.

Another thing that can happen is that the angles of the smartbone are not right. Check the animated angles on the smartaction with the transform bone tool and see if they match the angles you get when you move the smartbone in the main timeline.

There are a number of things that could cause it to not work.

My guess is that you don't have the 'dial' bone keyframed correctly. Sometimes there may be unintended keyframes because Freeze was used carelessly or Auto Freeze was enabled.

If the keyframes appear correct, try deleting the keys and re-keyframing the 'dial' bone. Sometimes the keyframes can 'break' if the bone had been directly re-parented to a parent with a different rotation value, which can throw off the child's rotation values.

It would help if you can at least post screen caps or even better an example project. Otherwise, it's just a guessing game.

Hope this helps.

Cool!

BTW, there is a way to get nested Smart Bones to work: The trick is to create a uniquely named smart bone action in the child group that can be driven by the smart bone action in the parent group. I described this technique in more detail here...

http://lostmarble.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 61#p202961

Jump down to the part "So if you ever need to create a 'nested' SBA setup, like the one used in this project, here's what you need to be aware of..."

Hope this helps. :D
