How to achieve scribble effect in Moho?

Post by papryg »

I'm already a bit experienced with Moho animation and I would like to achieve a scribble effect using vector lines.

The animation part for me is pretty straight forward, but I wonder how would you guys achieve "moving" lines - like in the scribble effect. Don't know really how to explain it, but seeing the video above - is there a script that makes lines behave like they are re-drawn each frame?

- Each vector layer tab has a tab "vectors". Look into, experiment.
- You can use brushes for even more visual nose.

As slowtiger points out, Vector layers have this option in this Layer settings, and you can animate the scribble effect on the lines separately from the fill edges...a pretty cool feature!

That said, what I prefer to do is bring my unprocessed Moho footage into After Effects and apply Turbulent Displacement to change the shape over time and then apply Posterize Time to control the frame interval (i.e., on twos, on fours, etc.) In general, this approach is easier and more interactive than using Moho's scribble effect.

The downside to this method is that it's a 'cheat' and it doesn't look quite as authentic as what Moho does. It's a bit harder to do if you need to separate the lines from the fills. But if you don't need to separate the lines from the fills, it's way faster and with proper settings it can look convincing enough.

Tip: if want to separate the lines from the fills using this method there are two ways to do this:

1.) Render from Moho without anti-aliasing and then use the free OLM plugin to separate the lines from the fills. The catch with this method is that this reveals gaps where the lines are extracted, so you'll need to do some edge expansion on the fill layers. Or...

2.) The proper way to do this is to render separate strokes-only and fill-only passes from Moho, and use Moho Exporter to render them separately. This will give you clean line and fill layers without the gaps.

This second approach works better but it's a lot of extra work to set up. I really wish Moho could do this automatically using Layer Comps and Moho Exporter. It really SHOULD be able to do that since Moho can clearly separately strokes from fills when you use the internal scribble effect. But for now, when I really want to apply the scribble effect to ONLY the lines, then I'll probably fall back to doing it inside Moho and not AE. I may lose some flexibility but it comes down to how much time I have for the task.
