Best Way to do shadows on characters?

Post by SemiRespect »

Hi, everyone, I was looking through these boards but didn't see anything exactly on this topic.
I've been using Moho for a long time and with smart actions and other advancements it's really metamorphized over the years.
My question is this, does anyone here have a nice and trusty technique for doing shadows on character's faces and bodies?
Do you use smart actions or do you maybe do separate shadow layers?
I've seem people build in separate smart actions for only shadows which has pros and cons, making shadows built into smart actions can be good but can also lock things down and make life difficult too.
Shadows on different layers often need to match up with the other body parts affected by the light source which gets tricky when dealing with smart actions.
I often grow frustrated by shadows and leave them off entirely but then the characters feel like they're lacking something.

I like the smart dials that throw shadows but they can be finicky and frustrating too.

I'm curious what some of you all have done! Thanks

I usually put shadows and highlights in a mask with a soft edge. If you use point binding you'll have to add these to the bones connected to that part. Then add smart actions to move the shadows points around. (you could also add noise to get constant movement ie candle flicker). Sometimes I'll add Shadows to layers like head to neck using 'clip shadow to group'. Occasionally I will also add shadow and highlights to the fill Shaded effects but harder to get movement from this and would be time consuming to animate.
