Using AI - an ethical dilemma?

Using AI - an ethical dilemma?

Post by Designspaceman »

Hello Moho-Mates,
I never was interested in AI doing something for me in my art. I didn’t even thought this could be an option. Then I saw a tutorial by Kilian Muster (Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTMzcIslbWE&t=1s). He demonstrated how he uses Leonardo AI für creating references for his backgrounds. And all of a sudden I was not quite that sure about AI. I decided to try this by myself and logged on to Leonardo AI for a month.

Leonardo AI has a feature that uses custom images as references for creating an image. This can be a style reference and in my case an environment reference. I used a painting I already did as a background for the style and a wireframe view of a scene I did in Blender.
Well the result is not perfect but a solid base to work on details. This could reduce the amount of time needed for a background by half.

Environment Reference:

Style Reference:

Result:

But something just did not fit. The AI mimics my brushwork but has a lot of differences in the details. It even creates new objects in the scene. Where do they come from? Well the AI would not be able to work just with the two images of me. So there is still an underlying big model that took images from elsewhere to get things done.

This brings me in a serious ethical conflict. Most of the image done comes out of my references but I will never be sure whether I have stolen something from someone else or not.

I decided not to use this way until we find a way to use AI without stealing from others.

I would like to hear your opinion on this topic. Do you use AI? And if so, how?

Greetings, Steven

Sorry, the referencing of images via mediafire worked not as expectet. You have to right-click on the icon and load the image in a new tab...

Fortunately none of my jobs requires the kind of image AI can build. I also find my references in photographs - what others already call "training material for AI". And I'm definitely able to draw my own version of my vision, completely with perspective and light.

That said, amongst the tens of thousands of AI images I've already seen I had found some few examples I kept for inspiration.
