Tracing image pixelated

Hello everyone!

I am using 8K tracing images in Moho, but even at that resolution they get very pixelated when I zoom in on the image, while they look much better in other animation software when used as tracing images, I tried to turn on Higher Rendering Quality in the image layer, but at no avail, anyone knows how to fix this?

Here is an example, Moho on the left, Tahoma2D (Opentoonz) on the right...

Don't know if this will help but try disabling GPU Caching.

This feature optimizes performance by pre-rendering images at fixed sizes, but sometimes this can look pixelated or have unexpected results. Disabling GPU Caching displays images normally, meaning, at their actual resolution. This option affects bitmaps and vectors.

I usually keep it enabled until something really distracting occurs, then I disable it.

If your using the Select Tracing Image command, try using a regular layer instead. I prefer working with a regular layer for the added flexibility. I typically set the layer to Don't Render and Ignored By Layer Selector, Transparency to around 25 - 40 %, and Blend to Screen or Multiply. This layer usually goes at the top of the stack.

I tried disabling GPU cache size in the Nvidia drivers then restarted my workstation, same results, and I always use image layers for tracing images, that's why I said that I tried to turn on Higher Rendering Quality in the image layer, which didn't work!

I wonder if Mac users have the same problem, if not, it might have to do with the Windows version of Moho.

I am uploading my test image, I cropped it so it's smaller, so maybe someone could have a look and see if they have the same problem...

Okay, I did some testing, the cropped image works fine, if I rescale my original image to 1K, it works fine, at 2K, it doesn't, it ends up pixelated, it seems that if the image is too big, then it gets pixelated, so here the full size image, this one gets pixelated on my end...

Oh, I meant GPU Caching in Moho's Display Options...



When an image looks pixelated to me, disabling this option seems to fix it. Maybe not all the time, though...I'm not sure about that. I don't know exactly when the GPU Caching pixelation kicks in, but it probably depends on the image's resolution, or the type of effect or display feature in use.

I often ignore the pixelation because it doesn't affect final rendering, but like you, of course, I want the image to look sharp when tracing artwork.

Funny note: today, I'm intentionally pixelating my animations.

Ohh, he heh, the GPU caching in Moho caches the unselected layers, so things run faster, it does not affect the selected layer, if you turn it off, all layers look sharp, if you turn it on, the selected layer looks sharp, but the unselected layers run from a cache, so they might not look sharp, problem is that the image looks pixelated even if the layer is selected, so that's not it, good call though!

I wonder if Moho has a fixed resolution threshold for displaying high-resolution bitmaps. I recall a similar Topic discussion almost a year ago, but I don't think we found a solution then. Will keep thinking about this.

Yeah, my guess is that the internal display cache is very limited, or maybe a bug with the caching system, which is why I was wondering about Mac users, might be a Winblows thing, for the time being I will use 1K images for tracing, which is better than nothing, thanks man!

Okay, I did some more testing, if I crop the 2K image real tight, it works, I get a very decent zoom at that resolution (1617px X 1924px), so 2K it is, but still, this is kind of weird, might have to do with the fact that I use a 4K monitor, but I have a RTX 4070 TI Super with 16 GB of VRAM, more than enough ram and power!

Yes, I get good scaling at 2048px X 2048px, but things start to get funky at 2100px X 2100px, looks like 2K is the threshold, at least on my workstation...
