Shading in Effects 1 not showing up

Just a quick one. I am attempting to put a shading effect onto my character the using Effects 1 drop down directly below the fill icon, but when i set it up, it doesnt show on my character even when i do a test render.

Sounds like you're not editing the Style in the Shape. If you don't have the Shape selected, you're editing the current Style setting, but not the Style used in the Shape.

Use the Select Shape Tool and make sure you have the Shape selected before editing its Style. This is not the same as selecting the Curves...you MUST select the Shape.
