Point animation vs. Bezier handles

Post by slowtiger »

I've found that constructing stuff with Bezier handles on, then animating points, leads to unintended effects, or more exactly: IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!

I was doing a mouth. In my usual workflow I'd have a shape, copy the point animation keys and paste them elsewhere, then go between these keys and adjust points to create the next mouth shape. But the corners of the mouth didn't play nice: the Bezier handles would do a complete somersault! No matter how often I turned the handles back and adjusted, the same happened again.

I had to start all over again: drawing the shape, but this time with Bezier handles switched off. Set the corner points to peak. Animate mouth shapes. Only then I could switch on Bezier again without any side effects (fingers crossed).

Does this happen to anybody else?

This sounds normal when animating with Bezier Points.

To prevent the unintended deformations, here are some tips...

1. Stick to Regular Moho Points. To prevent enabling Bezier mode, hide the Bezier Handles by clicking the option for each tool that supports them.

2. If you accidentally create a Bezier Point, it can be reset to a Regular Moho Point using the Peak or Smooth button. Use Curvature directly on the point to adjust it; don't use the Bezier Handles. (This is why I hide them.)

3. If you wish to use Bezier Points and want more predictable results for animation, use Victor's trick of Peaking the corner points. Victor recently shared a cool animated demo of his technique over on Discord. (This might be the same info Wes is citing, but here on the forums; I need to check.)

For the longest time, I avoided using Bezier Points for animated items in Moho, but I have started using them more routinely after Victor shared his tips.

In situations where Bezier Points are still problematic, I stick with Regular Moho Points, which always behave. The only downside is that I need to use more points than I would use with Bezier points, which hasn't been a big deal for me since I've been working this way in Moho for over a decade now.

To be clear, I'm not against using Bezier Points; I use them all the time for non-animated items, and as stated, I've started using them for animated items when I'm sure they will work reliably.

Hi. I posted this some time ago on Discord, but now I created a post here in the forum:
