New Moho Tutorials

Post by Ronbo »

If any of you have used Toon Boom Harmony you may be familiar with the ZeBirdBrain YouTube channel. This lady is a long-time Toon Boom educator and trainer and has also participated in TB webinars.

So I was rather pleasantly surprised to see that she has begun exploring Moho and posting videos on her channel. Since she is an experienced Toon Boom expert, it's interesting to watch her take on Moho. She seems to be enjoying it and I'm sure she will continue to add more videos to her Moho playlist, which I look forward to. Since she is so well-known in the TB community I think she is going to begin drawing a lot of potential new users to Moho, especially since it's much more affordable. I will be curious to see if at some point she gets into how Moho and Toon Boom can complement each other in an animation pipeline.

A word of caution: she speeds up her voice and raises the pitch in her videos to simulate a cartoony bird speaking, which some may find a bit annoying. I find that I have to turn the video speed down to about 70%.

To add to this topic...I just found out that Toon Boom has eliminated perpetual licenses. The closest you can get to that now is a 3-year subscription. Also, they are pushing AI in their applications and steadily increasing their pricing.

Here an experienced Toon Boom educator not only expresses disappointment in the direction TB is taking, but also points out that Moho is actually catching up to TB in capabilities and also public interest as people look for an alternative to TB. Like ZeBirdBrain, he plans to start looking into Moho further. I own TB Harmony 15 and I love it, but I also really love Moho, which has recently made much-needed improvements in the freehand drawing tool and has rigging and image warping/meshing capabilities that (IMHO) are much, much easier to use than Toon Boom's. For a hobbyist/independent animator like myself, Moho is by far the better option than TB.

Moho was ahead of ToonBoom back in 2005. I remember comparing them back in the day and Moho was a no brainer. ;)

It may be a matter of marketing and word of mouth and getting more people to actually try Moho. Toon Boom has been firmly established as an industry standard for many years, so it's interesting to see these two TB educators touting Moho to their followers. Also, I think it depends on your particular needs. I've always enjoyed and preferred drawing FBF in TB, but Moho's new freehand tool updates have really improved the drawing experience.

She's not the only one, Brad Colbow, a long time Animate user with 919K followers on YouTube, is also exploring Moho...

That's right...I forgot about Brad. Adobe has been shooting itself in the foot recently, especially with its attempt to kill off Animate. So it's nice to see longtime Animate & TB users taking a fresh look at Moho as a very viable alternative.
