I sketched about a dozen primitive style plants and scanned them in, live traced tweaked and colored and of course was told that I'd be better off with just one or two repeated symbols.
Here is a first poke at the island ...

The simple leaves in front were added later after I saw greykids Bunny Love. I wonder if I should eliminate everything except one simple tall plant and one short leaf as they did - theirs worked very well to set up the atmosphere -what do you think?

Here I tackled the landmass some more. Found out my assumption that one small symbol tiled a 100+ times would be easier on the system was wrong when I drew a simple mud lump and repeated, but on the plus side I liked the effect and it worked as a quick way to lay out the land and then I just broke it up.

I used a few different ideas to try to create some waves and here was my first effort that sort of works ...

Only problem I see is that using a few copies of this the system slows down noticeably on playback. Not sure if I need to export individual frames later and use some sort of video editor to put it together?
The wife - my inhouse free critic- says the color is way too light. I'm not great with color yet -what do you say? I guess I can go with a more intense blue, I just wanted to show shadows of a few things swimming so I set the opacity down but guess I can find another way to hint at life beneath the surface.
Any comments and suggestions are all to my benefit, still struggling with everything from style to line weights to color etc so love to hear from you pros.
Oh, and last but not least I'll be adding a sound track -no dialogue but some music and a few choice 'YAAAA!" and 'BURP!' things with some ocean surf sounds and squishy mud sounds. In thinking about this I guess if I had the resources I'd do the sound track first and then match everything to it but do you think it possible once I've prepared all the art that you can work on the animation simulaneously with the sound? Figure there will be only the aforementioned burps, gurgles and yells to lip synch.
Sorry to subject you to my rambling thought process.
