Set the project settings width and height to the exact size of the avatar or image you need in pixels.

In the AS window zoom the view in or out and move the view around to "crop" to what you want.

AS will output the rendered animation or image to the size set in the project settings.

Because of the small size you may need to adjust stroke widths possibly.

AS can't save as gif. You will have to use another application to convert the output from AS to gif.

I use IFANview to change to different formats.
I use it to change my gif files into png
for the alpha channels.

It is freeware

If you're using Windows, I'm going to (as usual) recommend GIF Movie Gear.

http://www.gamani.com/index.htm

I'll skip the usual raving about how terrific it is.

Use it for free for 30 days.

After that, if you find yourself using it continuously (like I do), it's only $30.

It can accept most graphic formats--including AVI video.
