Try to import the .ai file directly. That way, the colours should be preserved.

Save it as an older version of AI. I have had luck with version 5.5 or 8.0. Version 8 files load but take longer. Version 5.5 load faster.

From my experience the AI import works well. In AS the number of points is high making it difficult to animate well. AS works better with less points. That is how it was designed.

I would suggest you use the AI import as needed for now to get started but you should continue trying to learn the drawing tools in AS. They take some getting use to but I've found I like them much better than the drawing tools in AI.

In deference to my friend and AS colleague Vern, I'd like to say that, for me, drawing in AI then importing to AS is a dream.

The AI -> AS issue was the biggest obstacle for me to overcome when I first started with AS. Then I found that (as Vern alluded to) you have to save it as at least version 8.0 before exporting. Another trick that I found on our fantabulous forum is adding anchor points in AI.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points

For me, doing this twice works best. Again, as Vern states, this adds many extra vertices so if you want to follow AS Best Practices, you may consider going back in and deleting these. It's not necessary but it speeds things up and fewer points make your curves look better.

Different strokes for different folks Gnaws. ;)

That's actually when I stopped using AI import.

I had so much trouble animating all those points I would spend hours deleting points and redoing the shapes on my files... I remember the moment so clearly when I was hit with a revelation...

... It got so bad I was importing AI files then would end up deleting so much of the points I was practically redrawing them anyway. I would actually import the AI file... delete almost all of the points... then add in new ones and used a copy of the imported layer as a rotoscope to put it back together... so...

I ditched the AI step completely and did the other 10 or so characters for my project by tracing the Photoshop scans in AS. After that trial by fire I became an expert drawing in AS (Moho)... kicking and screaming... and cursing the whole time. ;)

Now that the brain washing is complete I use AS for almost everything (except type). I am so slow in AI by comparison. Sometimes when needed for print work I actually save out AS files to Flash and open in AI for eps export... talk about a bizarre workflow. ;)
