This may not be a new idea but I'm firing it off during a 10 minute break at work -so excuse the quality.
Basically the idea is to create a masking group and create a face layer that is something like the unwrapped skins they make for 3D model faces and slide this under the mask. I also wanted to try to fade one mask out and another in to be able to show the nose profile a bit and so the head wouldn't be so rigid but don't want the boss to think I fool around on company time so this is the best I could do. Hope it sparks some ideas -might try it after work.

That looks surprisingly good in the cartoon version.
Not quite as convincing for the more realistic face - possibly it would look better if you smooth/straighten out the mask on the audience's left, but the front-on nose is still a bit disconcerting.
A clever and potentially useful technique - thanks for posting!

Thanks Myles. I tried a few more efforts and it works better with simple toon shapes because we pick up more visual cues from real images and it breaks the illusion . I tinkered with adding a second mask and fading it in for the nose in profile -seems to work but I started to get confused as I had several masks fading in and out.
I did do one more simple shape I'll torture you with.
