Without more information I am only guessing at your goal here.
You use the Delete edge (D) tool to delete a line... that's pretty much the only way.
Because AS uses a unique curve description that is different from other drawing applications, deleting any points or edges will effect those on "either side". There is no way around it unless the points are "peaked".
What I would suggest as an aid but not a solution, is to add two "extra" points on the edge to be deleted. Delete the line between the new points, use the "dangling points" to adjust the curvature.
I use that technique all the time.
