bring an animation from one file to another???

I have a few animations with the same character and skeleton and I want to bring them all into a single file. is there a way to just import key frames from one AS file to another.

I also read something about "actions" and it sounded like it might be what I need? Is it? If so, can someone give me a slightly more indepth step by step than this...
