5.6 upgrade doesn't recognize 5.5 serial number

Post by human »

I'm unable to register my 5.6 upgrade because my v 5.5 serial number is not being recognized.

I've reported the problem to SM and I'll let you know the outcome.

This may be helpful to someone else if they experience a similar problem.

Note that a serial number received via e-mail cannot be directly pasted into the registration field, because invisible formatting characters may travel along with it.

(When I registered v 5.5, I had to copy the serial number to Notepad and then recopy the pure text, or manually type in the serial number. This technique does not, however, solve my current registration problem.)

Have you tried registering your current 5.5 AS with Smith Micro? That will register you on their system. Leave it for 24 hours or so, then try to download 5.6. That's what I had to do...
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

When I updated I didn't even need my serial number. It replaced my original 5.5 installation of AS which was already registered.

Are you installing it as a separate application in a different directory than the original? You want to run the installation so it installs in the same place as your previous copy of AS.

I'm just guessing of course.

Good guess.

I allowed the installer to install to the directory of its choice, in default mode.

(Windows, by the way).

I'll try to install again over the original 5.5 and let you know

OK, I just tried Vern's write-over install suggestion and it didn't work.

The result of that was to get the executables for AS Pro 5.5 and AS 5.6 in the same folder--and AS 5.6 still didn't accept the S/N.

For what it's worth, an XP subtitle identifies AS 5.5 as "Pro" and my AS 5.6 exe without the "Pro."

It's time to try Jahnocli's advice.

Hi Human, it seems like you've downloaded the wrong update, you need the PRO 5.6 version. Try downloading again from this link:

http://my.smithmicro.com/downloads/file ... _W_app.zip

When I installed the update it didn't ask for a serial number, it just rewrote over the original installation. I'm betting you accidentally downloaded the AS Standard update which might explain why it's asking for a serial number.

Yes, I got the wrong updater.

I needed the Pro updater.

The Pro updater recognized where my customized Pro folder and the install proceeded automatically.

The serial number was not a problem.

Thanks.

All this could have been avoided if Smith Micro paid some attention to its customers. It shouldn't be left to users to figure out how to do an update. SM gets a fat F from me on support.

Just stating on the website that one should send an e-mail message for support doesn't work. There should at least be a support FAQ for upgrading, and preferably a statement in this forum that the new update is out and where to download it. We have other things to do than hacking the download URLs.

I agree with Rasheed. I am happy to finally have the update but the process of finding out about it and then finding a link was like playing the game "Myst". ;)

Glad it worked out Human. It's been fun playing around with the new features. I was thinking the texture fill effect might come in handy for your Walt Whitman project.

What are the new features included in the AS 5.6 Pro .. is there anything new ... or just the same package with a different packing on it?

Try looking around before you ask questions -- it can save embarassment later...
