I've read everywhere and can't seem to find out how to do it. Could somebody enlighten me?

Paths are shown when you animate a layer translation. viewtopic.php?t=1956&highlight=waterfall Check out this tutorial for a good example.
There are also some scripts to help you, see viewtopic.php?t=2448
Just install the menu scripts, select your path on a curve, run copy selected points scripts from the scripts menu, and then either select your layer or your points and either run the paste to layer position or the paste to points position script. The layer position script even works in 3D.
