An example of "Strata-cut" Animation Technique

Post by Bee-ruce2 »

While surfing the web, I stumbled across an example of "strata-cut" animation.I had never heard of this type of animation before. Apparently, its made by "building" "loafs" of clay made up of many colored strands......then slicing the end of the loaf....taking a photo......slice again .....take a photo....etc. in a stop-mo way. The "art" of the technique seems to be in buiding the loafs in such a way to reveal imagery in them such as figures, objects, faces, etc. when sliced. Parts of the result appear like a psychedelic oil painting thats painting itself. An unusual way to animate.....but can get some interesting results. (http://www.bentimagelab.com)In the top menu....click on "Genus"... then click on "strata-cut" technique......then click on the colored image sampler)

That is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time, and I'm amazed I've never seen it before, considering how often it seems to be used. I recognized clips from Peewee's Playhouse, a Peter Gabriel music video, a Clearasil commercial, what appears to be an NBC promo, and I think Sesame Street, and yet it's all new to me.

Wikipedia also helped me find this page, which outlines the process in more detail.
