problem importing avi file

I can not seem to import a short avi movie file. I am capturing it with windows movie maker and have the settings on "DV-AVI capture" when I import to ASP a broken link symbol appears.

this is frustrating!!!

I just tested this, and it works just fine. Double click that problem image layer and select the 'Image' tab. Hit the 'source image...' button and reselect your AVI movie.

If that fails, make sure it is an AVI movie. Even though you have 'captured' video to WMM, it isn't an AVI until you save it to your computer. Just make sure you're not trying to load the project file.

I can dump only some of my avi's in to A.S. but some I can't.

Most avi's I can came from video from my webcam but others do not.

I do the image source thing and not thing still nothing.

Boy I'm getting steamed!! I've tried everything I know how. I tried what synthsin75 suggested. I am working on Windows XP and have, like I said, tried to capture in Windows movie maker. Then I used my video editing software to capture (Sony Vegas). O.K. still having the problem!!!

THEN.. I thought, O.K. a codec difference maybe NTSC vs PAL so instead of NTSC I rendered the video short in PAL. STILL broken link. Is there a newer ASP revision maybe I don't have. I am using the one out of the box. Believe it is ver. 5.5.

Philly steak, I can sympathise with your problem. I should however be straight forward.
I haven't done much of this , but here's what happened with the first test I tried since a long time ago.
I opened a project, in the same project I had and mov widescreen pal at animation compression full quality(in this case rendered from ASPRO but vegas should be fine,it's what I use for for most things).
I don't think codec is so much of an issue unless you are using some bizarre or unusual compression method, I wouldn't use divx for this fro example though it probably works fine.
The important thing for broken link is to have the file residing in a sensible place, try for now putting in the same folder as the As project file or in an 'images' folder in the same folder as the AS project file.

So here it goes. GO to file/import/ movie the window should open in the same folder as your project file, select the mov or avi and click open.

La voila! there it is front and centre.

update to 5.6 if you like it should be a free download from SM.

The only other thing I can think of is that the AVI file has a special character in its name. Odd characters can sometimes foul things up.

Other than that, the only way I could guarantee any solution is if you want to share the files. You can always PM them to someone, if need be.

Shot in the dark here, but we do know that resources can be an issue in AS. Even if you are capturing a short segment at full uncompressed DVI that can be quite huge and depending on how much RAM you actually have you might get a broken link anyway. I have 4GB and couldn't actually choke AS but I didn't have a huge file to try out.

First things first -- in troubleshooting you need to minimize the possible problems. Try a very tiny segment of uncompressed video -- say a second or two (and make sure it's at 640x480 at 30fps or smaller size). If that works you will have a clue as to what's going on. But make sure it is not a faster frame rate or larger resolution for test purposes.

I did try a variety of different clips I had and found that many codecs would not import properly. But if you are capturing at a raw DVI format that shouldn't be an issue.

Conclusion: Yes chucky it was a codec problem. In my list of avi options (when rendering) under custom> you go to video formats and there you will find various options to choose from. I chose the very bottom one called "uncompressed", rendered it and imported it to ASP. Bingo! Finally worked. Still don't know why NTSC DV won't work. Thanks all.
