exporting with alpha

Post by toonertime »

i am wondering if i design a character in
AS can i export JUST the character to a PNG
with alpha?

i have tried saving in different
formats, but I always get the background
along with the character, so there is really
no way to manipulate just the character
in another program.

I assume you're using the File->Render menu command. With that command, there is no alpha channel. However, if you use File->Export Animation, the alpha channel does get generated. When you use "Export Animation", you can set the frame range to just a single frame if all you really want is one still image.

So what you probably want to do is use Export Animation with PNG as the export format, and set the start and end frames to be the same number.

Any reason we lost the PNG transparency when saving from the Render command with the 5.6 update? 5.5 actually did save the alpha.

no, i was not referring to just a render.
i mean a full animation of just a character.
how is just an animated character without
a background exported into a movie that
another video program can composite?

Export to Quicktime using the 'millions of colors+' compression depth. The plus represents the transparent alpha value.

thanks for the response! my stupid new
pinnacle video editor actually won't
accept a QT millions of colors option,
the bastards!

I have an older Magix video editor
that I will give it a try in.

Thanks again, Mr. Synth!

In that case, you might see if your video editor can import a PNG image sequence. You'd just need to import the sound separately, but you may already be doing that.
