Need a 3D Chistmas tree

Post by touchdown »

Hey all,

Working on a project for December already. I need a ready-made 3D christmas tree, with textures, I can work with inside AS.

I know there have been issues in the past about baking issues when opening objects in AS. How are those default sample 3D models done?

Links or tips are welcomed....

Thanks! (merry christmas?)

I did a tutorial for baking objects in Blender last year sometime - can look it up if you need it.

Do you have a sketch of what you need? Might be quicker to build one to order than mess about with an almost right. Xmax trees are reasonably easy to make.

Photo real 3D trees are about the hardest objects in the world to make -- there are tons of companies that ONLY make software to create 3D trees (and $$$ it is).

Do you really need a photo realistic 3D tree? Or do you simply want something that will look decent in 2D but that you can maneuver around?

I used to have a photo real 3D branch that had a Christmas ornament on it (with a reflection of a Christmas room -- I used it for my Christmas card one year). I'd be glad to give it to you but I don't know how it would work in AS nor do I know how long it would take for me to find it (but since you have a few months lead I suspect I could come up with it before then). Hmmm, come to think of it, it might have actually been the whole tree (but the rest of the tree wasn't decorated -- just that branch).

Yeah, I'll take that look over 3D any day of the week.

Ah -- I've just spent too many decades wasting my time doing 3D. Oh that I wish I could have had AS that long ago. Photo real? Phsst, any idiot can get that with a digital camera <g>.

I am assuming he is looking for non-realistic - having photo-grade objects with 2D flat would look disjointed.

Another KISS approach to CGI would be to create a line, use the leafy brush tool then dupe the 'branch' and re-position an-infinitum in the threeD window - I did a quick test and it seems to work fine. If you decorated the tree with circles which face camera, any pan or different view of the tree would make the circles look like 3D orbs.

Blender now supports fur and I have seen some very realistic looking long grass achieved using the hair tool. Blender is very much open-source and free. Now up to 2.48a, released in December.

A rough sketch is what is needed - help everyone figure out the best approach.
