To use the add point tool you need to click and then drag out the line before letting go of the mouse button. Start your next line segment by clicking on the last point and dragging out the next line.

No such thing as an orphaned point. Points only exist in pairs that connect a line segment. Zoom in really close or just try to translate it and you should be able to see this.
