Bone Sync Question

I am still new at this so try not to bite too hard. I have been going through the tutorials as well as attempting the tasks myself as I go. When it got to the talking head part 4.3, the image of Ronald Reagan was mostly complete. I have been able to add bones to my own digital image but cannot seem to find out how they got the bones to move in sync around the mouth.

Note, I have placed a checkmark in the bone constraints of the one I want to move, however only that one moves when I try to manipulate the bones.

So how is it that I can get the bones around the mouth to move in sync? Unfortunately, the tutorial is just about completed when you import it.

You can import sound into AS. You don't hear it, but it will give you the volume in the time line.

This is not in regards to "lip sync", I was referring to how you can move one bone and it will move the other is sync as referred to in tutorial 4.3

From the tutorial:

"Select the Manipulate Bones tool and use it to drag the bone at the lower right side of the mouth. Notice that the other mouth bones move as well - they have been set up using bone constraints to move in sync with the lower-right bone."

Don't know about that tutorial, but in general when one bone moves another it's because it has been parented to that bone. I'd suggest you read up about bone parenting and understand that concept fully and it may solve your problems.

When following the example in AS, the only bones that are parented are the ones on the outside to keep the head from moving. The ones around the mouth move in sync. But it does not explain how to make them do that.

I assume when you say you "placed a checkmark in the bone constraints", that you are talking about the angle constraint. That only limits the rotation of the selected bone. The other bones are moved in sync because they have the control bone chosen as their rotation constraint.

If you select one of the controlled bones in the tutorial and open the constrains menu, you'll see that it has the name of the controlling bone in the rotation constraint.

Thank you synthsin75, that exactly what I was missing. Here are the things I had to do:

1) On the bone I set the constraints on, I had to type in a name for it (ex. Key)

2) On the other bones I wanted controlled by the "key" bone, I went into the bone constraints menu just like you said and I was then able to choose the bone I named "key" from the Angle Control Bone drop down.

You wouldn't believe how long I have been looking for that answer. I guess I should have signed up here sooner :)

Glad to help, and yes, this is the best place for answers.

As you can see from some of the other answers, we may not always understand immediately, but someone around here is bound to know the answer. Sometimes we may need to see the file to figure it out, but I don't think I've seen a problem that someone here couldn't solve.

I hear ya.. I am the type of person who always at least attempts to do it own my own using the helps and tutorials, but sometimes you gotta ask.

After reading a bit hear on the forum, the GOLDEN RULE is always to:

TRY GOING THROUGH THE TUTORIALS FIRST.

Any way.. I really do appreciate your help. Now I have to go and figure out how to bind these damn bones to a single image. I took a digital photo and cut it up. Now my bones move all the pieces at the same time.. so off to the umm.... drawing board again.
