Why can't we all just get along?

Post by mkelley »

This is about the most obscure sub forum I could find -- I really wish there were one that no one visited (or much) because I don't want this to in any way interfere with the real meat of the excitement over AS 6. Consider this a tiny little out of the way plea for a truce among warring parties.

I'm starting this because I just received five PMs from various folks who I had never heard from before (and some I never even knew were on this forum -- nothing wrong with lurkers, I lurk on many forums myself) congratulating me on my "stand" and telling me how much they support me. This actually horrifies me a little -- I don't mind being the cranky old man, but I in no way intend to create division on my favorite forum (even including the ones I admin myself :>).

I know that some mod types around here are getting mail on the other side but it didn't bother me half as much that folks would rally around Mike and SM -- that's how it should be. But, please, while I do appreciate that I'm not alone in what I'm saying, let's be clear on exactly what that is.

First of all, I take back any bad things I have ever said about Mike or Smith Micro. As the line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail goes, let's not quibble about who killed who. I don't care what happened in the past whatsoever and while none of this is about me I would hope that Mike and Co. can at least pretend the same.

Second, can we all agree that all of this, every single thing that has happened here, is because we love AS so much. Heck, if we didn't care we wouldn't get mad, right? We ALL want what's best for it, and really the only disagreement it what that might be. I can't see anyone arguing with that.

Third, I also think we could agree that AS 6 is a truly wonderful thing -- it's not perfect, but then what is? I'm really really happy I'll have it (uh, soon?) and there are at least three things in it that will make my life much easier (and not the things you think). I wrote elsewhere but I do believe this: Mike did what few programmers can do in any new release, and that's put in something for everyone.

I'm also really really sorry that I feel a need to point out my experience in life here -- I shouldn't, but I've also been told point blank that I don't know what I'm talking about at times and that's patently not true. But I won't mention it again unless someone challenges me again.

From here on out I'm only going to point out things in AS 6 Pro that don't work as advertised. I won't express any wishes for future releases (probably never but we'll see how long I can hold out -- I DO have lots of confederates who are willing to advance my agenda :>). I plan on spending lots of time programming things which I need and others might find useful.

I produce a half-hour weekly animated series with AS -- I work with it six hours a day and I can't speak for others but I doubt whether there's many people who use it more. It's the center of my life and has been for over a year now. If there is anything, absolutely anything I can do to help Mike and Co. I would do it in a heartbeat -- all they have to do is ask.

Mike, I apologize... again.

Earlier this evening someone from the forum who I highly respect told me I'm a hot head. Not as a criticism but just a statement of fact. I laughed because it's very very true... I am a hot head (that's why my head almost exploded, not the other thing). I do get very passionate about things I care about. We have our love of using Anime Studio in common. This person also told me that it's not my place to defend Mike Clifton or Smith Micro. Mike can defend himself (as far as I am concerned he doesn't need to defend himself). I just hate to see bad things said about a hard working, talented person, trying their best to make so many people happy, all with different needs, desires and expectations.

When I see that... I get... hot headed... and then my head explodes. ;)

I promise you right now I will make every single possible effort to bite my tongue and back off. My only request (and you seem to agree) is that you make an effort not to include personal feelings or grudges about Mike or SM when reporting issues about AS 6, however legitimate they might be from different people's perspectives. I still feel strongly that those personal views are not helpful in this forum. We've seen how those views can effect others... and not just me.

--------

On another note it has come to my attention that it may seem as if I'm "on the payroll" somehow.

That is absolutely totally untrue. I honestly and truly am NOT a representative of Smith Micro in any way at all. I can't stress this strongly enough. I am just some guy who uses AS like every other forum member. I just happen to have a HUGE MOUTH that gets out of control sometimes. ;)

I do not now, nor have I ever had any type of compensatory working relationship with Smith Micro, efrontier or anyone associated with Moho or Anime Studio. I am the "volunteer firefighter" on the Anime Studio "team".

As far as I know someone at Smith Micro is out there somewhere thinking... "Oh GOD that heyvern is blathering again! Get him some medication!". ;)

I respect you Mike. I respect Wes. You two are FANTASTIC contributors to this community. My compliments of your scripts are truthful and heartfelt. I wish we could all go back in time and maybe handle this in a different way. I know I would handle it TOTALLY differently. I am as much to blame as you are. We both went too far.

You may not believe this but I do understand your position and your frustrations.

p.s. Gosh darnit.... It's all Walmart's fault those silly early releasing crazy backsterds. Go back in time and yank all those boxes off the shelf.... after... I buy some lottery tickets of course. ;)

Can we forget this whole stupid disagreement? I really really like you guys. We have a lot of work ahead of us with AS 6 and would hate to ruin our working relationships.

p.s. I'm too lazy to hold a grudge.... and probably too weak from sitting in front of a computer too much... my arms get tired. ;)

Well said, Vern.

(And I'm too old to hold a grudge -- while some may be skeptical, that's an actual photo of me as my avatar <bg>)

Same here! No... really. I've lost some weight since that photo was taken. And I have a goatee now... but essentially the same.
