Help with sound on Linux PLEEZ
Hey, I have Ubuntu Studio on my laptop, and it won't play sound. The sound card (Sigmatel) is recognized, and all the volume levels are turned all the way up, but there's no sound coming out. I even tried using an external USB audio adapter, and NOTHING. It worked fine with Ubuntu Studio 8.04, 8.10, Suse, and Ubuntu 9.10, but not Studio 9.10. Any help would be appreciated! Thx.
First of all have you tried starting AS with padsp?
In a terminal just run
Else there are a few tips here;

It makes A.S. OSS-sound go through the pulse audio-server.padsp /path/to/AS/AnimeStudioPro

It must be something specific of ubuntustudio 9.10 because as you said it does work with 9.04. If it is a production machine don't go so further. Stick to 9.04, or you're in a hurry with a special version of any program? It worked fine with Ubuntu Studio 8.04, 8.10, Suse, and Ubuntu 9.10, but not Studio 9.10. Any help would be appreciated! Thx.
I'm on 9.04 and sound works fine on PC and laptop. And don't miss any special feature of new versions

I'll try that, but the problem is that my graphics card doesn't work with 9.04, but it works with Studio 9.04. I tried over and over again, but 9.04 was extremely slow and crashed when I tried to do any complex tasks. Also, I can't figure out how to install Wacom driversGenete wrote:It must be something specific of ubuntustudio 9.10 because as you said it does work with 9.04. I did ask a the Ubuntu forums, but those are so busy that it went by unnoticed. What is this pulse audio thing? I tried alsa-mixer, but I'll have to do a Google search of pulse audio.

Can you try dropping back to 8.04 LTS.
For a production machine, you might seriously want to consider sticking with the long term support version. (If you need it for work)
I once had a similar issue with sound. It was a long time ago, but I seem to remember seeing that my master volume was maxed out, but the pcm was muted.

Just curious, what's the hardware where you have problems?I'll try that, but the problem is that my graphics card doesn't work with 9.04, but it works with Studio 9.04. Can you trigger the crash doing something in particular?
For wacom see this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wacom

Yeah, here's how to trigger the crash:
Turn it on.
As for downgrading to 8.04, I don't think that's a good idea. Maybe 8.10, but not 8.04. I'm gonna try reloading and see if it helps for some reason. If not, I might have luck using XP as a host system and running Ubuntu in a virtual machine, though I don't think I can use my graphics card if I do that.

Update:
I installed XP on my laptop to see if the sound would work on it, since I couldn't figure out what was causing the problem. I didn't.
I opened it up and looked at my sound card only to find that the guy who fixed it didn't solder it properly (mountains- not blobs). So, thanks for your help. I'm gonna solder it myself. Hopefully I won't solder myself.

Here it is. It's not microscopically small, so I think I can solder it with out messing it up. I circled the part where it was soldered into a blob instead of a mountain, so it fell off. Sorry about the huge picture, but I still haven't reinstalled Ubuntu and I don't have an image editing program on my Mac (that I know of
) so I used MS paint, which doesn't use anti-aliasing to resize images.

Okay, I reinstalled US with out my sound card plugged in, and it still has a SigMatel sound card in the volume options. I thought this was the internal speaker, but that won't play sound either. I tried using a USB adapter I have, but it's not working either. Any idea what the problem could be? Do I need to change the default sound card? I have a feeling fixing the internal sound card won't help...
