Importing into illustrator

I know this is an old topic, but its new to me. I've read a lot of the posts but could not find how to import into Anime Studio 6.
I go to Import/Images but my illustrator files do not show up there...

Please Help!

First, make sure you are going to File -> Import -> Adobe Illustrator File... in Anime Studio.

Then, make sure your AI files are saved in Illustrator 8 format. There is an option in Illustrator (I use CS2) to save to an older format right in the "Save As" box.

Also make sure you're not using any complex effects like blends because it won't import into AS properly. The simpler you keep your objects, the better they will look once they are imported. AS6 has improved the way AI files are handled but don't expect miracles since the two programs handle vectors differently. If you are using AS5.6, I have discovered that you might as well redraw your objects instead of importing them.

I just noticed that I do not have an "Import Adobe Illustrator" option under "File/Import...."

Illustrator import is only a feature of Pro, not Debut.

Darnit! I figured as much.
Can you tell me what the major difference is with the two?
Will my artwork look much better in "Pro" versus "Debut"?

There's a table of the differences between Debut and Pro over at the AS site:

You'll want to select "Anime Studio vs. Anime Studio Pro" from the dropdown ("Explore more features")

Both versions are the same as far as how they display your artwork, so what you draw in one version looks the same in the other version.

Thank you so much. I found it....
You have been a huge help! I've preparing to release my first Kids book with my publisher, and i'm using AS to create some short animations for Utube to promote the book. So i'm having to learn quickly.

I have one last question hopefully....

Is it possible to create a ".gif" file from Anime Studio? or will I have to do that in another program?

Glad I could help... I've been lurking long enough, I figured I might as well contribute something to this great community here...

From what I can see, unfortunately it looks like AS Debut (or Pro) won't do .gif files... you'll have to save your animation out as a Flash SWF, Windows AVI or Quicktime MOV movie. You can always use Google to find an "avi to gif converter" because there should be something out there that can do the job.
