my white nightmare

Post by basshole »

This is on a mac:

I'm trying to render a QT movie from V6, and keep getting no picture. Using QT player, audio's there, picture is just a blank white expanse from start to finish. Sort of has a picture if I play with VLC player, but looks all screwed up. Ideas? Thanks.

I'm also on a Mac and only have issues with one or two codecs. What codec are you using? Have you tried using other codecs?

In my most utterly humble opinion the best codec to use is animtion as it retains full quality. You can convert/compress the file later when you're editing it or going to put it on the net.

That being said, I'm always open to new ideas!!

I've done a few tests. . .a ten second, 30 second. They came out fine, so I wonder if it's the length? I'm trying to render out a minute-ish scene, 1615 frames long. We'll see when it's done in a while.

I am using animation codec, default for V6 is apparently MPEG-4. I also just updated a bunch of stuff on the mac, so maybe it'll work better now.

By the way, I can watch it rendering in the little window, and it looks perfect, but when my QT window automatically pops up after the render finishes, that's when it's White Christmas at Basshole's.

I'm going to use image sequences when I put this together "for real", but Final Cut Pro doesn't like them, and I think even if it did, my Imac doesn't like dealing with HD footage, so I"m making SD QT proxies in the meantime. When everything's ready to be exported, I'll replace those with hi res image sequences.

I've seen this happen to me to, after the rendering process qt will automaticly open the rendered file and it's all white, if I close qt and reopen the mov file it's ok, try that and see if it works for you. I don't know at all what this is all about....very strange behavior.

The Mac filesystem doesn't update stuff automatically everywhere. When I leave the folder open I render the QT into, it will show just a filesize of 4k or so, even when it's completely rendered. Closing and re-opening that folder shows me the real filesize.

My guess is that QT gets its information from the non-updated filesystem and showas a blank file where there already is a fully rendered movie.

I hadn't tried that. I'll try it if I get this issue again.
