Switch layers vs Actions in AS 5.6

I am having trouble with using scripts and the determining factor on whether I should keep messing with them is how necessary they are to lip syncing.

Is it easier to animate a head turn with actions and use switch layers for the lipsync
OR
use switch layers for head turn and RL's Actions script to run the lip sync

I'm having trouble with both and a little encouragement will combat the frustration. Does anyone know what works best, fastest, easiest, most flexible...

I'd say with switch layers but that's because I don't like actions really.
