Have a look at these rare and wonderful photos. See what they did and how they did it in the time before particle effects and bone rigs.

I especially like the snow flake effect. It is a completely mechanical solution, but follows the very same principles we use with motion paths and layer rotations. It's amazing!

Very interesting, thanks for posting.

It's funny how in the olden days of film they had to come up with unique ways of accomplishing effects. Today everything's just done with CGI and quite honestly looks terribly cheesy and cheap.

That is a fantastic web page. Now I want to see Fantasia again to remind myself of how good Disney used to be. They were absolute innovators.

I don't agree that everything done today with CGI looks cheesy and cheap. I think it depends on how you do it, and what your skills are. There are lots and lots of movies using CGI that are incredibly well done. In the old days there were also plenty of "cheesy and cheap" non-CGI special effects. It's just a tool that can be used well, or not, depending on the people using it.
