animation: how long would it take?

Post by jose1984alberto »

hello everyone, im about to begin an animation production and i was wondering how long would it take a small decent production in anime studio to be finished.

its a short animation, about 25 min. all caracters are already designed, also the scripts and storyboards.

Its the first time im involved in a production this big, or small...

im not sure if im making the right questions.

ps: my native language is spanish, so pardon my french.. hehe

If your going to do the animation all yourself, some advice, do 5 seconds. Then you will know.

I don't think anyone on here can tell you how long it will take for YOU to do the project.

It all depends on your work flow, how good your animation skills are, how much you know about the software, and so on and so forth.

Making a good, professional quality animation that is only a matter of a few minutes long, can take up to two months or more, being made by someone who has those skills, and maybe even a second or third person helping them out.

SOOOOOOOoooooooo...

Don't know if that really helped at all...but it might put things into perspective for you

In 3 months I could do about 10 - 15 minutes of animation in AS - but this time doesn't include design and rigging. And I am really fast.

Well, how long is a piece of string? Ha ha.

You could rush through it and make it in 2 weeks, or spend some time on it and make it over a year.

Nick Cross spent 3 years on his project, and I think its awesome:

If you worked like him, your project would take you about 7 years.

If you worked fast, it might take you a month.

If its a story about a dot that never moves on the paper, it might take you ten minutes.

If its a story about the little lion who got lost in a crowd in Mardi Gras, and you wanted to do it as realistically as possible, it might take you 15 years.

If...ah never mind ha ha.

you might be able to finish the "Rough" version of the animation in 3 months and it will take about a month to perfect the colors, movment, etc. Also keep in mind that lip sync may take like 1 week if the cartoon is 25 minutes

Around 15 seconds a day seems to be the norm for the animators I work with (me too-though this varies widely according to scene). If you can manage that, figure about 100 days to get it done? I'm sure you'll be slow at first, and get faster as you go. As you're going through this, you'll probably get a sense of what you can get away with, and cut corners where needed, or expand where needed too.

Do you have a deadline, and are you doing this on your own? How much time can you spend each day on this? What happens if it's not finished in three months? I think the time realities will dictate what needs to happen, and how.

good luck.
