Copyright for Anime Public Screenings

Post by DK »

Hi.
I have just been contacted by our local gallery with regard to screening animations. They asked me if I knew who they could contact for permission to screen excerpts of Anime to the public.

Would anyone on the forum have any solid info they could offer on this?

Thanks

I would think, as with any other copyrighted medium that they would have to contact the author/owner/publisher of the work. Should be straightforward as long as they know who the owner is.

Historically, in the US at least, you'd have to hire a lawyer just to get the attention of a media publishing label. I've had this experience personally. In the last year, however, I have seen rights agents pop up that streamline this process without the need of an expensive lawyer. The rights to display are the same price, but you spend much, much less money on the process.

I paid my bullshit attorney (a low paid and inefficient clerical assistant did all the work) three times what the rights cost.

I'd like to note that a French label was also involved as the original owner. I didn't have to pay them anything, and approval was immediate once they saw my project. The lesson is: if you can stay clear of greedy and Byzantine US publishers and rights holders, you may have a much easier and cheaper experience.
