I continue to come across an irritating problem. If I draw a shape ( a square) then draw a separate design in side that, my problem mostly occurs when that design is not enclosed, it does not show up.
Recently I was drawing a box and tried to divide the shape with a line and the line never appeared in the preview. When I tried to 'Select shape or create shape' so I could color the halves differently it didn't work, and would simply change the whole shape the one color.
What am I missing?

I don't think you can make major changes to your shape after it is made. But sometimes you can as long as it won't change the shape in a fundamental way -- something like adjusting a curve.
If you do need to change the shape more dramatically, you can change the points to the vector/point structure underlying the shape. So in the case of drawing a rectangle and then splitting it with a line, your rectangle shape can't update with the new vector information. So you have to delete the shape using the "x" looking tool. But leave the points! Then use the points to create the two separate shapes.
But! There is another issue with creating adjacent shapes. My understanding is the line dividing the two shapes needs to be composed of at least three points or else the program won't recognize them as shape-worthy. So you need to add a point in the line somewhere.

THings to do:
1. Make sure you add this new line and try and create the shape on frame 0 of your timeline. I think you may be doing this on another frame number other than 0.
2. When you divide the shape, you need to make another shape on top of that shape of half the box. Or, delete the box and select one half and make a shape from that, then select the other half and make a shape from that.
