You have to export the images with a transparent background first. In your favourite raster image editor remove all the background around the image and be sure you select PNG format with alpha included when export the image, before import it to any other place (i.e. AS)

Or can I do that on AS, and where on AS?

Why do you draw in AS, export the image and then import it again in AS??

Anyway, export your artwork to png image format and it should use a transparent background by default.

Is there a need to output these layers as images - you might be better keeping them as vector layers if you plan on using bones.

Just a thought.

I'm guessing he/she doesn't want the points for some reason. Maybe add bones and have a paper doll like animation.

Other then that I have no clue why.
Sorry for bad animation
