Working With an Animatic

Post by lwaxana »

Hi all,
I created my first animatic to work out the blocking, timing, and to frame the shots of my scenes. I expected to enjoy watching the animatic, but it's not very entertaining. Is it normal that the animatic is boring due to lack of animation and sound effects? Or is this a sign that the writing / direction needs revisions? :\

I'm just trying to get a sense of how much the mood of the story should come through in an animatic.

I bet that the animatic is not boring. Please show us the clip and then we can judge ;)

Thanks, Genete. The animatic still needs some work before I can post it. I'm just wondering what other people's experience is with animatics. Is the mood of an animatic a good reflection of the mood of the final animation?

A storyboard is working tool, not a final product, so it can be dry (I'm guessing most lay people don't bother watching the dvd bonus that shows the movie in storyboard form for example). Certainly animatics can reveal flaws...if it's boring, it could be sign that something is not working (script, timing, camera work, etc.).

In this post, script done, Sinclair posts his animatic, Failed bit #139 (some rough language), which gives a good idea what the final piece might've looked like. For his part, he decided not to finish the project. Much better to have invested hours on an animatic than months on a finished animation, only to decide you don't like it.

I like it as an example of a good animatic. It even has some motion and switches to suggest crude motion and lip movement. To me, it's easy to visualize the final piece.

I don't work professionally so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Hi Iwaxana
Great you are doing it right and making an animatic :)

Don't go ahead to animation if the animatics not working for you. You cant fix story or pacing there.

You often end up re-timing and re-drawing stuff until your animatic is working. You should be able to sit in front of your animatic and watch it like a show/film. Pose it out as much as you can. Add whatever sound you have, make it as complete as you can.

If you take a look at the FK site theres a few animatics for Clucky there.

Feel free to ask anything more specific as animatics are a major part of our workflow.

neetersguy and knunk--Thanks for your replies! In light of that info, I think the animatic is revealing some dull spots in the story and that I need to work on the pacing. Thanks for all the advice. It's good to keep in mind that this is the stage to sort everything out. Thinking of it that way helps me to be more patient with the process. :D
