Switch Layer interpolation bug - major
Moderators: Víctor Paredes, Belgarath, slowtiger
I think what happened is that this feature wasn't tested as thoroughly as new features because it was an "old" established feature. Plus it was very hard to notice with out specifically testing it thoroughly. For example I didn't notice it even when I was told it was there because I scrubbed through the keys instead of rendering, or possibly I didn't put in enough keys to see the issue.
At some point during beta it "broke" and no one noticed it. These things happen.

Hmm... inconclusive... The switch I'm referring to is the mouth on the Banjo Guy animation. It looks like it's interpolating quite a bit, but by the end, it looks like it's not interpolating at all. I wonder if it's the first switch between a given pair of layers. Then since there are so many possible phoneme combinations, it takes a while to exhaust the combinations...? This is really strange because this is the same switch I was talking about before that only interpolated the first switch (or so I thought). I wonder if it's because I imported the character into another file?
[edit] One more thing: I rendered it in two parts. So maybe that reset the switches half way through.

I tested this some more.
Made a switch layer in AS7 and it interpolated fine except for the frame I was on when I turned on interpolation. That particular frame didn't have a check next to any layer. I selected the layer again, and then it worked.
Made a switch layer in AS5.6 and opened it in AS7. It didn't interpolate consistently. Reanimating the switches didn't help. Turning layer interpolation on and off didn't help. Importing it into another .anme didn't help.
Hope this info is useful.
[edit] also scrubbing the timeline and closing and re-opening the file didn't help.

Yikes. Sounds like AS7 has enough teething problems to make people wary of using it for production. I know it does me. I have a 3 month contract to complete a short and possibly some little interstitial type stuff as well in that time - I don't really have the wriggle-room it sounds like AS7 might require for messing about with bugs, fixes, hacks and other issues.
Maybe if the core features of 2d animation were made rock solid you could then think about implementing other doodads. As it stands watching from the sidelines while user experience of the new release unfolds with head scratching and the collective untangling of potential production pitfalls, I am not feeling very confident about this release.
I had kind of thought frame cycle bugs and similar types of issues might be a thing of the past with this app, but apparently not. Disappointing.

Any new version of an application may have issues at the beginning. This is true for ANY AND ALL APPLICATIONS. If you were foolish enough NOT TO BACK UP your files you only have yourself to blame. You should never ever ever, open a file in a new version without keeping a backup in the old version just in case something happens.hothead wrote:i am having the same problem it even cause me to damage a character that am creating and rigging for months nownow i have to start all over again
I can't image how you lost months of work simply from a problem with interpolation of switch layers. It doesn't DAMAGE THE FILE in any way, it is a display/rendering problem.

To digress: It would be nice to use the ASP7 tools and downsave to ASP6 or 5.6 and avoid the interpolation bug altogether. This is a pipe dream, but consider the workflow benefits: The ability to share files of different versions, the ability to rig in one version and animate in another. I realize that total interchangability is impossible due to file format versions, but even limited downsaving would be useful.
Do you think this sort of thing could be scripted?

Good grief... yes it probably is. From 7 to 6 should be simple enough. I was working on an application but... saving out using lua should work.neeters_guy wrote:To digress: It would be nice to use the ASP7 tools and downsave to ASP6 or 5.6 and avoid the interpolation bug altogether.
