Online file storage - Not luncheon meat!

Post by heyvern »

Anyone in need of storage space online should check this out:

http://www.box.net/

They have a free option with 1gb of space. It is really nicely done and very slick and easy to use.

Google apparently is planning to offer something similar... but in the mean time this looks really nice.

One of the things that is always frustrating to me is visiting various forums and having problems with users' links. Many people just seem to jump from one storage place to the next always searching for the cheapest or one that is free.

While I can understand that maybe money is tight for some but, really, is it all that much money? I pay $99 ($106 with tax) for my .mac account through Apple and I have 10 GB of storage space. I have the iDisk volume on my desktop and it is synced up so that when I drag and drop or save files to it there is nothing to think about. It automatically uploads and does everything.

All that for just 29 cents a day. Don't most of us waste much more than 29 cents a day on frivolous things? Like that cup of coffee? That donut? That candy bar? I have no problem spending that $106 every year for the peace of mind it brings me.

There has to be equivalent versions of iDisk on the PC. If you share your work and files on forums isn't it worth it?

Anytime I need to post anything for long term download I use Lulu.com. I can also charge for items if I want. They make money and are not going away. For short term there are so many that I lose track. Half of the time the file is gone after a while, which is alright by me.

heyvern please don't use that luncheon meat word in you posts, It attracts them like flies.

I have my own site so I can post things there, but Box.net is a nice alternative. I recently had to go into my own site and delete a lot of files... what a pain. So there are files posted on some forum somewhere that have broken links.

One of my clients is going to purchase the business account at box.net because it has a wonderfully simple interface. He is NOT technically savvy. He has two people working for him, me and one other person. We work over the internet and need to share ENORMOUS GIGANTIC print files easily. Email won't work. If you have a 150mb file stuck in your mail box... it either won't go through at all or it blocks all the other mail behind it.

A lot of "free" storage sites have been around for ages so the files won't have to be moved. People move things around most likely due to bandwidth restrictions! Box.net HAS NO BANDWIDTH RESTRICTIONS and it has no advertising... NO ADS! If it did I wouldn't even give it a second look. They make the process straight forward and don't punish you if you don't "pay" by having stupid pop ups or weird steps to go through to download like some other ridiculous file sharing sites. They also don't "cap" your upload and download speeds.

Google is planning right now to launch the exact same thing. It will be like a "Youtube" for file storage. Box.net was the first one to offer this type of file storage. It is unique.

Yes, some people CAN NOT afford to have their own internet space for file storage. Sites like this are a valuable and necessary resource.
