Gradient

So how(on earth!) can I get my picture to show the gradient colours.
I am following instructions in the tutorial 'hills' All I ever get is one colour.
Although it gives the right colours (sky blue and hills green/brown) in the 'render done' window. My picture itself doesn't change colour.
I'm sure it must be something very simple... But I still have not figured it out.
I would appreciate help very much I am beginning to get annoyed..

Many things like gradients and masking do not show correctly in the work preview area. Make friends with the crtl+R hotkey.

Uh, if you're not seeing any colors at all in the work area, make sure that that layer is visible, and that you have fills enabled in the display settings.
