For the Mac, definitely, Snapz Pro X, although for quickies, iShowU, is a favorite, because it doesn't use after-take encoding, like Snapz Pro X. Many screencasters (video podcasters, using video screen captures as a medium, instead of live video) use Snapz Pro X, because of superior quality of the output.

Yeah, I'd be interested in live screen capture software for making video tutorials in Windows, as well. Preferably something fairly light on system resources.

Wow, Camstudio sounds amazing. And it's open source! Already installed it, but I'll play with it later.

Thanks Selgin!

For a linux user I think that gtkrecordMyDesktop is the best.

Also there are other tools that do similar job.

My 2 cents :)

I have some tips for you. Because catching the whole screen at 30 frames per second is very processor intensive, I suggest you lower both your screen resolution (e.g. 800 x 600, or as low as the application permits) and your frame rate (e.g. 10 fps). Furthermore, as you're going to use a video codec, you should set the key frame rate fairly high, e.g. one frame every 480 frames. This saves tremendously on the file size.

I would also create/use a separate user account and wallpaper for the screencasts, so you don't have to show your personal stuff to the world.
