ok, for many years I haven't agreed with this request, but now I see it clearly.
AS really needs lighting.
I'm working right now with AS and After Effects. I use after just for the lights, it's a great software, but separate the animation and then composing it requires a lot of steps. and if you work in 3d with AS, you must re-think all the animation for composing in AE.
I'm pretty sure almost all of the greatest animations we have seen here in the forum have lights. As must have lights effects (and, of course, if someone doesn't like lights, just don't use them).
3d lighting

What kind of "lights"? A directional light source on a "flat" shape? A light that creates shadows on a rotated "3D" layer? Or an actual 3D light source on an imported 3D layer?
I would like to see a light source effect similar to the "Bevel and Emboss" layer effect in Photoshop. It is a "pseudo" 3D effect that can be very effective. Or an update of the gradient fill effect would be great. A radial gradient that could be controlled by a bone would go a long way towards cool "lighting" effects.
If Mike could just open up the scripting a bit more... this could be done as a script or plug in type thing... oooh... plugins... another feature request.

I think that the problem with doing lights in AS is that you'd have to make any shadows generated within the layer that is being lit, since the AS 3D environment isn't rendered. There's nowhere for a shadow to fall, so to speak.
I think what is needed is a set of global shadow effects. Something much like the layer shadow/shade or style shading effect, but that works for the whole project and overlays any individual effects.
That way you'd have a single shadow angle knob/settings for the whole project. I'd imagine needing probably at least three such effects.
Of course these should be animated like the current shading/shadow effects.
But... that may not be what you had in mind.
