The answer to the first is you cannot -- Vern has a copy bones script posted here that works IF your bones are named the same and IF they happen to be facing the same way and basically the same size/rotation/etc. but other than that you are out of luck.

Actions themselves are saved with the group layer they were created on, so if you just load this into a new file you'll have the actions associated with that character (but you cannot assign this to a NEW character).

Yes, I understand you. I wish this was the case as well.

However, if you stop and think about it, that would be hard to accomplish since your other character would have to be constructed almost *exactly* the same (same orientations, same size, etc, etc). Otherwise any key would only be *somewhat* correct.

In general what I do when I want to "copy" an action to another character is to create a small AVI and use that as my background to pose the new character. If you create keys which are "step" keys it's even easier to see (obviously your new action won't use step keys, though).

You might want to take a look at Vern's copy bone keys script, though -- it *might* do what you want/need (it doesn't for me).

Or you could try importing the character with the actions you want, delete that character's artwork, and build the next on that same skeleton. If you're really careful (minimal) with you keyframing, you can even alter it a bit while maintaining the bulk of the intended motion.

May be easier to roto, like Mike said though.

just get on with it - you could have recreated the action on the 2nd character by now! :)

people try to find too many shortcuts to actually doing work - just think, the fact that each movement is slightly different will mean your animations will look less 'off the shelf' and more individual?? how can you improve if you just 'stamp' the same action you created ages ago on every character you make?

the amount of time AS saves you over other methods is considerable - don't try to push it to full automation as your work will undoubtedly suffer.
