Kill harvey438 and all his friends.

Post by dueyftw »

Harvey the robot should die from electrical starvation. But until then can someone get Mike to add one of those annoying test for human in the registration? Blocking IP address doesn't seem to work all the time.

Also don't click and read his posts, please. Maybe if the real person realizes that no one is read the posts, he will go away on his own.

ahahaha, oh you wish. They mainly do it for the Google link ranking and they don't care if humans read it or not. if someone does click through great but its a byproduct.

You should install a mod that stops the spam.

We do and am ... the administrators ban IPs as we collect them, the mods juct keep the place tidy: The difficulty is we are up against machines and they dump 30-40 posts into the board and we have to delete. Just takes time. The action taken against the original Chinese video spam worked.

We now have to resolve this monkey who is using a different server. Eventually, when they run out of non-banned IP addresses, they move on.

Bear with us.

If you are up against machines, can't you install one of those character generator things that require you to echo a sequence of characters in order to post? I know it will be slighty more painful to use the board, but if it cuts down on the autobot-generated crap I'd put up with it, for one.
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

This can be turned on but the fundamental problem is phpBB forum is public code: As such, anyone has access to the source code to figure out weaknesses in the core design. They then hack around them, bypassing the visual verification: I have another forum which was the latest code - everyone wanting to join has to be approved by me; one day I found 37 posts on the site, all of which had bypassed the entire registration system and approved itself: Hats off to the Ukrainians who figured that one out: I closed the board.

Its an endless battle and its never going to end: There will be minor skirmish victories from time to time but ultimately, the was has no end.

In my email I have the option of deleting as junk. I assume that the email sever picks up on the junk and eventual bans or labels the traffic as junk for everyone.

Is it possible to add code that would allow the users here to label Harvey and all his friends as junk, get five and the post is moved to the spam bucket. I think that that would cut down on some of the work the administrators have to do. The only down side would be some a_h- getting five accounts and moving everything to the spam bucket.

There are look up tables for known spam IP sources and you can use them. All of this has to be done by the administrators (will Mike as he is the only admin). The spam is killed off by the moderators. Upgrading to the phpBB3 latest would help and getting all new registrants to be admin approved will also keep the creeps out. But Mike doesn't have that kind
of time.

to my knowledge there is not plug-in for phpBB to allow voting of a post off to the Spam box ... there is no reason for H and his friends to come back and vote legitimate posts to the bin.

You can delay posts until a moderator approves them, but that would kill the current ideal situation of fast Q&A's.

The block banning of the original Chinese spammers worked a treat, though a couple of people in Australia whose ISP's were routing traffic through cheap lines in China did get hit. Hopefully that is now resolved.

Ultimately, ban lists of IPs, user names and email addresses together with Mods catching the stuff which slips past are the only way of keeping the site clean.
