Problem:
The visible checkbox doesn't change what I see on the stage and that becomes confusing. I can only see the changes when I select the bone layer that affect that layer or the group folder layer that contains the layer to see the changes.
Solution:
An option in preferences to hide invisible objects at all times. Or even choose to show only object lines.
Make invisible objects... always invisible

Actually I don't see the problem. I just tested with layer visibility and it becomes the layer invisible without problems. When you are on the invisible layer, you are able to see the paths, when you select any other layer, you don't see the invisible layer.
Now, if you select "hidden in editing view", you will be able to see the entire layer only when you select it. It seems logical to me. I always work with "hidden in editing view" and with "don't render this layer", this settings are to create reference objects as flour or animated references for walkcycles. I use it too when a file have characters I don't want to show in the current render.
