It's in the eyes....

My eyes look so wrong...dead like, is there a way to tinker with the way they look?

I have tried radial gradient, but they still look so flat.

A lot depends on your character style.

For example, in anime characters have a lot of eye detail. They usually use linear gradients darker at the top and lighter at the bottom for the irises. They also tend to have other elements like shiny white spots. Then in emotional scenes you can pull the classic, just-animating-the-eye-shine shot. ;) If you are doing an anime style, search google images for "anime eyes." There are tons of examples.

I drew these eyes in AS a long time ago. I never animated with them, though. So the setup has no masking etc.

But really I don't think the detail is what makes eyes look alive. I think it's the movements and expressions of the eye lids and eye brows. Moving from expression to expression really makes them alive and shows that the character is thinking. I also find that it makes a huge difference to move the iris/pupil quickly and to follow a direct path from point A to point B. Even the direction that the eyes are looking says a lot about what the character is thinking, according to charts made by psychologists.
