Can rendering mess up project?

I have been working on using effects on my project and once I tired to render it it kept shutting AS down. I did this three times because it never actually rendered it like it would normally tell me that the rendering was done. However I open the document and see that the images I imported have a a broken file symbol on it. Whats happening can anyone tell me? Much appreciated!
